On the road ... again ... three years later

So you may have noticed that this blog stops suddenly in July 2019 during our trip to the Greek Isles. Well, a few things have happened since then. Some everyone knows about, like a worldwide pandemic; some not everyone knows about, like a new job in a new state for me, 18 months spent apart, two high school graduations, a move to Virginia, and my discovery of the joy of Rothy's (seriously, they're so cute and comfy).

Anyway ... here we are three years later, which nicely coincides with our third attempt to get to Iceland. Try one: turns out I have to have one of my kidneys out, long story (seriously, it apparently started at my birth). Try two: turns out Omicron isn't just a typical variant and shuts down everything. Try three: turns out the third time is the charm, and this time, we're sticking the double "land"ing by adding on Switzerland.

So, we set off from Dulles and headed North.

Just about six hours later, we landed in the land of ice and discovered the magic of Iceland immediately when Penn forgot his glasses on the other side of customs, and an officer tracked us down at Joe and the Juice, where we were getting our 6:30 am coffee and juice on, to return them with a smile. Takk!

The drive in from the airport was amazing. The volcanic landscape reminded us of Hawaii, and with no rain clouds in sight, the bright sun (which rises around 4 am and sets around 11:30 pm this time of year) seemed likely to stick around.

We found our AirBnB easily, and it turned out to be even more amazing and spacious than it looked online--the entire floor of a building just one block off the main shopping drag complete with great art, fantastic light, and the hottest geothermal water on earth. Penn found the turntable and put on an ELO album, and we danced with travel-energy until we found the three comfy bedrooms that quickly filled with our family for a quick morning catch-up nap before we hit Reykavik.

We're back ... and we're still taking ourselves with us.
