Saying So Long

On our last day, we slept in a bit, knowing we were off to The Little Goat Diner for lunch.  While our schedule never allowed us to get into Chitown's must-eat The Girl and the Goat, we got in at the better place anyway (says Ned).  Well, we did score a prime booth at the open window in Stephanie's cooler than cool and crazy delicious diner.  We ate fried pickles and pickled onion rings, tomato & apple soup, Kalbi ribs, pulled pork, and wing style burgers.  So good!





From there, we set off for a short trip to the Field Museum, taking in an exhibit on the Cave Paintings of Lascaux, a trip through an ancient Memphis marketplace, an encounter with mandating lions, a room full of priceless gems, the iconic Sue the T-Rex, and a great exhibit on Bioluminescence that Ned and the kids caught last summer at AMNH while I was in meetings (told you we love museums!).  Of course, there wasn't enough time to do it all, but we didn't do too bad :)







And, we had time for more hill rolling!


 

Then, some Thai food before heading off to O'Hare.

Back to a Hogwarts Adventure Time

There was a newer Second Cup (upscale Canadian Starbucks) across from our hotel, so we started Saturday with a quick brekky.  Look at how lovely and bright.  The kids are marveling at the built in flat phone chargers on the window counter. I was marveling at the flat white in my cup and the yummy steel cut oatmeal with steam sweetened milk and dried bananas and coconut in my bowl. Our cups are always half full ... at the very least.  In truth, they typically run over! Caffeinated and ready to roll. Our first stop that morning was a Back to the Future script reading featuring voice actors.  FE has never had an event like this before, and BTTF is having a moment--it's currently one of Penn's favorites, and we know the cool hunters' lead dog is always several yards ahead of the pack.  So, we made it a FE must do.  Clearly, he was right.  The reading was scheduled for the Convention Center Theatre, and by the looks ...

My Kidney Ate My Summer Vacation

So, this summer, we had an amazing trip to Iceland planned.  We were going to ride the small Icelandic ponies, soak in the blue lagoon, and stalk Bjork.  Instead I spent about a week in the hospital, found out one of my kidneys was dead and infected (that’s a twofer), got a nephrectomy tube for a while (look it up, it’s super gross), had surgery to remove said kidney, and couldn’t lift anything heavier than gallon of milk for about six weeks.  Goodbye, Iceland; hello, binge-watching Wild, Wild Country and home nurse visits.  What a great summer. Oh, and when I wasn’t binging Netflix shows about cults, I started planning a reboot vacation around Thanksgiving holiday.  Iceland’s not as attractive an option in November as it is in August.  Enter Hawaii!  On reflection, this selection may have been in part unconsciously influenced by my watching the entire Brady Bunch Hawaii arc on MeTV while I was in the hospital. Sunglasses Lost and Found -- Saying Goodbye to Ireland

One thing we had learned on our Switzerland trip was the benefit of staying near the airport the night before the flight, so our travels on our last full day would take us from Galway back to Switzerland by train, then to an airport hotel, and then--whatever. Three of us grabbed breakfast again at Esquires, where our server--the older gentleman from our first breakfast--remembered us and was happy to share that they were fully staffed that morning! Breakfast was again delicious. Ned went back to the hotel to ensure we'd all be packed and ready to go, while Harper and I ran off in search of Hazel Mountain Chocolates in the Latin Quarter. It was right next to the kinf_olk store (of course, how did we not see it?). We were plied with chocolates by the gracious HMC staff, learned that everything was gf, and bought a bunch. Another big up for Galway, the staff in every shop we visited were super nice, welcoming, and helpful--plus they had gorgeous accents! After chocolating-up, we grabb...
